Gemunu Herath currently holds the position of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya. A Professor in Civil Engineering, he holds a Ph.D. in Urban Engineering from the University of Tokyo Japan, a MEng. in Water and Wastewater Engineering from the Asia Institute of Technology, Thailand and a B.Sc. (Honours) in Civil Engineering from the University of Peradeniya. Addition to holding several administrative positions at the University of Peradeniya, he is teaching both at undergraduate and post graduate levels in the areas of water and wastewater treatment, hydrology, industrial waste management, water resources management, air pollution, solid and hazardous waste management. Further he has carried out many consultancy/advisory assignments as a consultant, or as a regular staff member, in both other local agencies and international agencies including for NDB, Water Supply and Drainage Board, JICA, JBIC, IGES, Asian Development Bank dealing with water and environmental aspects for over 29 years. He is a member of the International Water Association (IWA) and the Japan Society for Water Quality. He also serves in many environment related panels in Sri Lanka.
